Picture of the Great Nebula in Orion.

M42 is a huge star forming region that is some 30 lightyears across.

 Lying some 7,000 light years distant in the constellation Serpens, a great cloud of interstellar gas and dust has entered a vivid process of star formation.

Open star cluster M16 has formed from this enormous gaseous and dusty cloud, the diffuse Eagle Nebula IC 4703, which is now shinning by high energy emission light, excited by the radiation of its massive hot, young stars.

It is actually still in the process of star birth, this formation taking place near the dark "elephant trunks" which are well visible in my photograph.

At Albion Park NSW on the 26/5/07 at 3.45AM

It is a guided shot for 15 mins at 800 ISO through an Orion ED80 and Canon 350D with an F6.3 focal reducer and Orion Skyglow filter.

Whole assembly was piggybacked on a  Meade 10 inch Lx200 classic scope and the autoguiding was carried out via an Sbig St4 autoguider.

 

 

 

 

 

 

The Witchhead Nebula near the star Rigel in Orion.

HorseHead Nebula near the star Zeta OIrionis.

It is a very faint (14th mag) nebula with a dark horse like cloud in the foreground.

The nebula is illuminated by background stars.

The Flame nebula lies just next to Zeta Orionis and is much brighter than the Horsehead nebula.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

At the heart of this great nebula is a star ready to go supernova !

It is an unstable giant star that periodically throws off lobes of matter.
